The Agriturismo “Mulino a vento” is situated on a private property of about 8 hectares, cultivated with olives and belonging to the family Torriti since 1912. The property contains the pricipal building “Villa Torriti” where the owners Giuseppe, his wife Nicoletta and their son and daughter, Luigi ad Letizia live, and the “Mulino a Vento” part of which, dating from the 1400s, was restructured in 1999.
Mulino a vento takes its name from an old wind mill used for grinding grain of which, unfortunately, no trace is left. For many years the house was occupied by sharecroppers who worked the land for the grandfather and then for the father of the now owner.
A painstaking restoration was undertaken which has kept intact the characteristics of the house without stripping it of its soul. The agriturismo “Mulino a Vento” is made up of two levels uniting the past and the present, where modern conveniences are integrated with a typical Tuscan style.
The house with its pool is found below the ancient Etruscan wall that surrounds the city of Cortona and, raising ones eyes you can catch sight of the Basilica of Saint Margaret with its adjoining convent and the Medieval Fortress of Girifalco.
The terraced fields on the property are cultivated with olive trees. The organic oil produced from the olives harvested every year in November is in keeping with the passion that Giuseppe feels for nature and natural products. The olives are harvested by hand and the pressing is done with the cold press method, in this way the natural organic qualities of the oil is not lost. All of the phases from the harvest to the final pressing of the olives allow for an interesting and immersive experience as one waits for the tasting of the new oil which is, without a doubt, the king of our cuisine.
What will absolutely impress you the most about the Mulino a Vento is the stunning view which opens out onto the Valdichiana and the Lake Trasimeno. A view that presents to you an evocative and unique panorama from the house, the garden and also the pool with its beautiful little tiled alcove and fountain.
The small village of Monte Cetona, the austere and imposing Monte Amiata, the moon reflecting in the waters of Lake Trasimeno and the cityscape of Cortona on the hillside, are the perfect frame for a place which will become difficult to forget.
Silence, peace and privacy in this corner of Cortona seem almost impossible to attain, with the center of the city only a few minutes walking distance. Nevertheless, Cortona is there, a few steps away, with its restaurants where you can taste the typical Tuscan fare, the bars with their tables in the streets, always full of people enjoying their drinks or coffee as they take in the view of the streets and piazzas of the town, and the stores for your favorite shopping.
Nicoletta and Giuseppe together with Luigi, will welcome you personally and will try to satisfy all of your requests but above all will make you fall in love with a place so special as the Mulino a Vento.
